Travel is my chosen profession (as well as my passion!) ; along with holding certifications, having a business license, and paying into to the BC Travel Assurance fund, I spend considerable time educating myself.
Part of this (the most enjoyable part!) is going on familiarization trips, but firsthand knowledge is only part of what I need to know. It’s important that I keep up to date with new trends in travel (such as Fathom cruises’ Impact Travel) and new hardware (such as Holland America’s Koningsdam & RCCL’s Harmony). I need to know about the on-going promotions my clients can take advantage of, and the best way to book various products. I need to keep updated with what’s going on in the world, and what conflicts, strikes or weather events might affect my clients. As well I need to know something about geography & history so I can help advise my clients on where to go and how to make the most of their trip.
Last week I attended Cruise 360, a convention that covers all aspects of cruising. Although I missed several days of work, and gave up my weekend, the opportunity to learn and connect made it very worthwhile. The people working in the cruise business are truly inspiring, and I’m proud to count myself amount them!
